A New Departure from Oxford Aviation Training
Essential Mathematics and Essential Physics are two of the first offerings in
a comprehensive suite of GCSE courses from the hangars (stop punning
now) of OATmedia. This review looked at Essential Mathematics Part 1:
Number, Algebra and Geometry, and Essential Physics Part 1: Electricity and
Magnetism.
The suite is aimed initially at adults who need to plug holes in their
education.
Well packaged, both programs installed painlessly. They then went into a
‘how to use’ demo with voiceover. I would have liked some indication and to
have decided for myself whether I wanted explanations. However, after that
the user interface is intuitive, friendly and fast.
It was immediately apparent that the explanations are clear, well thought
through, and rich in graphics and animation, especially the Physics. Both
courses cover the material comprehensively and do not lose interest half
way through.
On the negative side, in keeping with an aviation no-nonsense style, there is
little interaction during the presentations, little questioning and little discovery
learning. Sometimes information between pauses was too long, although
you can pause at any point. The questions could perhaps have been tested
rather than you writing them down on paper and simply revealing the
answer.
The products will need reversioning to appeal to 13-17 year olds – not a
major effort, or to act as remediation – perhaps a larger effort.
Despite the niggles, the products grow on you because of the sheer quality
of the content - input from experienced teachers has
paid off. OATmedia is to be congratulated for
having the courage to tackle such a sizeable
quantity of material.
